Everton fans have been treated to a culinary surprise at their new home

Football fans have been left in hysterics after Everton appeared to go to unorthodox lengths to “troll” their city rivals, Liverpool.

As the club prepares to move to it’s new Everton Stadium home at Bramley-Moore Dock in Vauxhall, 25,000 supporters were invited to attend a test event at the £800 million arena on Sunday. The match saw the Toffees’ under-21 side take on a Bolton Wanderers B team.

With Everton leading 1-0, fans were forced to evacuate the ground after 65 minutes, however, in a planned procedure that was required as part of the club’s requirement to obtain a safety licence for the 52,888-capacity waterfront venue. During the game, meanwhile, one fan posted a snap of their half time snack – a hot dog notably drizzled with Everton-blue sauce, avoiding Liverpool-red.

“Everton are using blue ketchup at their new stadium, Bramley Moore Docks, so they don’t have to use ‘red’ sauce,” hailed Football Away Days on X as they shared the photo themselves. It prompted one fan to confess: “That’s a level of pettiness that I’m completely willing to get behind.”

Another penned: “Oh no, the blue ketchup hot dog has found its way to my family group, and I’m baffled at how many heads the joke has gone over. It goes back to the age-old joke that Blues ‘don’t even allow red sauce in our house. Hilarious from Everton in my opinion.”

A third fan wrote: “Everton not having tomato ketchup at their new ground because it’s red is absolutely hilarious.” Whilst a fourth person joked: “Kind of admire that level of depressing childish behaviour. Back to the blue additives in the sauce it is lads.”

Across Stanley Park, however, Liverpool fans weren’t as sold on the idea. One declared: “Liverpool win titles, Everton change colour of ketchup. What they’d do to be us.”

A second quipped: “If the club spent a much time on the logistics as the ketchup you wouldn’t be 15th and as petty. But embarrassing really. Let’s bang a load of food colouring into the fans food bizarre attitude from the club.” Whilst a third exclaimed: “Even Leeds are not that petty. Remove the red from McDonald’s signs fine. Turn ketchup blue? That’s just a condiment.”

Responding to the gag, Everton FC told us: “Just for clarification, the condiment is a blue garlic aioli, not ketchup or mayo, and is a very deliberate and appreciative nod to Everton and for the fans. Traditional ketchup most definitely remains available too!”
