The Ford Ranger was selected as the truck of the year at the Detroit Auto Show by the 50 jurors that judged the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle Awards (NACTOY) for 2025.

Winning the car of the year honours was the Honda Civic Hybrid while the new electric Volkswagen ID.Buzz microbus won utility vehicle of the year.

“With such a tremendous crop of vehicles to review, our jurors worked overtime to decide the ‘best of the best,’” said NACTOY President Jeff Gilbert. “This year’s winners are on the cutting edge when it comes to technology, styling and value.”

Founded in 1994, the NACTOY awards are the longest-running new-vehicle awards not associated with a single publication. Vehicles are judged by 50 automotive journalists from print, online, radio and television media in the United States and Canada.

In winning truck of the year, Ranger had to edge out competition from the Toyota Tacoma and Stellantis’s RAM 1500. It’s the fifth straight year Ford has had a vehicle nominated for truck of the year.

Honda also continued its success in the car of the year category with the Civic Hybrid. It’s the third time in the past four years that Honda has claimed the crown.

Also nominated in the car division were the KIA K4 and the Toyota Camry.

The win by the ID. Buzz utility vehicle is Volkswagen’s first NACTOY award honour since the Golf earned car of the year honours in 2015.

To claim top spot in the utility category, Volkswagen had to fend off the two other finalists – General Motors electric Equinox and Hyundai’s re-designed Sante Fe.
