Channel 4 game show helmed by Sue Perkins, Double The Money, has reportedly been cancelled after just one season.

The brand-new competition show – which has been likened to The Apprentice – aired over the summer and saw 13 couples from the British general public given a set amount of money they had to double exactly in a certain time limit.

Or face a ruthless elimination.

By the sixth and final episode, the remaining couples had to convert £10,000 to £20,000 over the space of four weeks with the team making the most cash winning the prize, and an additional £20k for their efforts.

From car washes to bingo nights to erotic art workshops, the pairs had plenty of inventive ways to cash in, as long as they never chose the same idea twice.

Unfortunately, it looks as though the show won’t be returning for a second outing, per TV Zone.

It joins an increasing number of reality shows facing trouble across UK TV.

Over the past few years, Channel 4 has cancelled Rise and Fall; ITV has appeared to axe Ninja Warrior UK, Tenable and Alan Carr’s Epic Gameshow; and Channel 5 has bid adieu to Puzzling with Lucy Worsley.

As for the former Bake Off host, 55, she is still booked and busy. In November 2024, she released her latest travel documentary, Sue Perkins’ Big Adventure: Paris to Istanbul, on Apple TV Plus.

Discussing her hopes for what viewers would learn from her televised travels, she said on The One Show: ‘Don’t be frightened.’

The comedian continued: ‘I have, I suppose, been very frightened at points in my life. I didn’t have a lot of experiences growing up so I was very reserved when I first started travelling.

‘When I went on my first adventure to the Mekong my suitcase was so large everyone used to laugh at it, they used to say they would need another plane to put it in.

‘I packed everything for every eventuality, for a shark attack, mouse repellent, you know… in case I met bees. And now I just travel with a rucksack.’

In 2023, the media star headed to Alaska for a Channel 5 series.

Ahead of the show she reflected on what makes a good presenter to the i.

‘The role of the presenter is really just to be a sponge, not to know anything, but to go and talk to brilliant people who do know things, to have fun on viewers’ behalf, see things most never get to see, and be enthused and grateful about it,’ she said at the time.

Double The Money is available to stream on Channel 4.
